No More Stolen Sisters sign, Ferney Heritage Library, Ferney, BC, Canada, 2022
The red dresses and the sign in the window "No More Stolen Sisters" refer to missing Indigenous women. The dresses are an aesthetic response to the more than 1,000 missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada. The artist, Jamie Black, creates this work to evoke a presence through the marking of an absence. She chose the color red after an Indigenous friend told her that this is the only color spirits can see. Red dresses are used to call the spirits of missing and murdered women and girls back to their loved ones.
