Librarian, OH Close Youth Correctional Facility, Stockton, CA, 2017

Stockton is the buckle of Californias prison belt and a prime feeder to its school-to-prison pipeline. While we were at the prison library, we photographed a program called Father2Child where teenaged prisoners were recorded reading a childrens book. Then the recording and book were sent to the fathers child. The program was meant to build a relationship between the father and child that might not exist, especially if the prisoner was serving a long sentence. It was heartbreaking to see some of the teenaged prisoners struggle to read even the simplest childrens book. Seventy percent of the incarcerated in American prisons are illiterate or can barely read.
