Library Claire-Martin, Québec City, QC, Canada, 2019
In 2019, we noticed that the province of Québec had recently experienced a dramatic drop in church attendance. There seemed to be a less religious presence reflected in the social life of the cities and towns than in the earlier times of their conservative Catholic ancestors. In the past, the church was a major force in banning books that were considered heretical or not religious enough. Ironically, some of these same churches have now become public libraries. Library Claire-Martin is in central Québec City and was established in the former St. Matthews Anglican Church. This library still feels like a church and even retains a small alter and baptismal. It was breathtaking to see the transformation.
