This father created a library in memory of his daughter killed in Mafia violence, Annalisa Durante "Open Doors" Library, Naples, Italy, 2018
Fourteen-year-old Annalisa Durante was killed in the crossfire between two armed rival gangs in the gritty neighborhood of Forcella in Naples. From that day on, her grieving father, Giovannino Durante, started the Open Doors Library as he defied mafia violence. The Library and its non-profit organization promotes moral and civic redemption that can hopefully spread from Forcella to the entire city of Naples, and beyond. Because of Annalisas young age, it also speaks to the world of children, offering them models of social education, civic engagement and alternatives to violence. It partners with 40 other groups in a program called Reading Forcella to promote reading and literacy for young people. The work continues over 20 years after her death. When we met the father in 2018, his powerful story moved us to tears.
