Abby Library, St. Gallen, Switzerland, 2016

Founded in 719, this Catholic religious complex was one of the chief Benedictine abbeys in Europe. The library of the Abbey is one of the oldest monastic libraries in the world. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The martyrdom of St. Wiborada occurred here in 925 when Magyar marauders reached St. Gall. While protecting the library and saving the lives of priests Wiborada knelt in prayer when she was murdered with an axe. She was formally canonized in 1047 and is considered a patron saint of libraries and librarians.
