Stadtbibliothek Bremen, Germany, 2016
The Stadtbibliothek Bremen used to be an old police office and jail. Its massive walls were imposing, and the entrance felt a little creepy. I imagined what it must have felt like to new prisoners entering this foreboding place during the Nazi era. Instead of a place of incarceration and desperation, the library is now a welcoming place for the community. The librarian showed us the buildings vast interior space including the former police office, the children's library, and boxes of books to be distributed to refugees in nearby camps. The books were in Persian and like many libraries throughout Germany, this library supports an impressive program for migrants to assist them in starting a new life here.
