Central City Library and addition, Dnipro, Ukraine, 2016

This library was in the city formerly named Dnipropetrovsk, which was located a three hours drive from the hot war with Russia in eastern Ukraine. During the Cold War, the city was a secret manufacturing site for Soviet missiles and weapons. In the post-Soviet era, the name was shortened to remove the Russian influence. I was struck by the older librarys recent addition which greatly expanded the size of this important library. Programs in the library included art therapy classes for veterans returning from the war and an in-house psychologist dealing with soldiers and families suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. As a soft-power gesture, an exhibit of Dawsons American Public Library photographs was travelled by the US State Department throughout Ukraine during the following year.
