Tree in interior courtyard, Bayview/Linda Brooks-Burton branch, San Francisco, CA, 2022
Linda Brooks-Burton was a tireless advocate for literacy and education for youth and families in the poor San Francisco neighborhood of Bayview. Discriminatory financial practices and intentional disinvestment contributed to the poverty here and in similar communities throughout the US. Anna E. Walden, a city clerical worker, established a fund to build the first library at this site in 1969. The City of San Francisco built a LEED certified replacement in 2013 adding beauty and hope to a struggling neighborhood with many challenges.
