New homes built on the Truckee River floodplain, NV, 1989

In 1989 I started a project with photographer Peter Goin and writer Mary Webb to study the Truckee River watershed and the ongoing water war between the city of Reno, Nevada, the farmers and ranchers of western Nevada and the Paiute Indians of Pyramid Lake, Nevada. This water system is a good example of critical water issues facing all the arid regions of the American West. Uncontrolled growth allowed the homes in this photograph to be built in a potentially dangerous place.
