This billboard represented a particularly irresponsible ad campaign by developers and gaming interests in Lake Tahoe trying to commodify a national treasure. In 1992 I started the Farewell, Promised Land project with writer Gray Brechin to examine and photograph the transformation of Californias environment and its social history. We spent five years looking at the story of, and alternatives to, the destruction of the place we called home.
