Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, CA, 2025
The restoration of the Klamath River not only affects the river and the people who live near it. It also affects a vast number of forests and marshlands such as the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge in California. Historically, the Klamath Basin contained approximately 200,000 acres of shallow lakes and marshes which attracted over 6 million birds. In 1905, the Federal Government turned over large parts of this area to farming. Today less than 25% of the historic wetlands remain. But the recent river restoration efforts are helping restore the region's ecosystem and local economies. Although President Trump is attempting to block already approved funds to restore this habitat, local funding will help keep hope alive in this ongoing water war.
