Pilgrims praying, Narmada River, India, 2001
India is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. However, the Narmada River is one of the longest and cleanest rivers in India. To Hindus it is one of their seven holy rivers. Pilgrims sometime perform a holy pilgrimage of circumambulation of the river. Over 30 dam projects have been proposed for the Narmada and government agencies have undertaken rescue excavations to transplant several sacred sites and temples.
